Your student organisations tell you that compulsory membership is OK because they're democratically run. They believe that under Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU), students would desert the organisation in their thousands. And, privately, they question the ability of a student body they consider to be lazy, apathetic and cheap to make an informed choice on membership.

That's not good enough. A tiny minority of students vote in elections, a sign perhaps that these organisations are unpopular, complancent, irrelevant and out of touch. Students are intelligent enough to decide for themselves whether they should pay for the sort of services the Union, Guild and Sports Association provide.
