News Corp carbon neutrality is fair and balanced

11 May 2007 | Joe Stella

News Corporation chairman Rupert Murdoch has pledged to offset his empire’s carbon emissions and “weave” environmentalist messages into film and other content. The Australian reports that the media mogul has called on other companies to do the same.

By offsetting carbon emissions with abatement projects, Mr Murdoch can claim that his business is “fair and balanced”.

Mr Murdoch’s plan to add pro-green propaganda to News Corporation content puts environmentalism among a select number of evil schemes Murdoch promotes, including the Iraq War, media deregulation and the People’s Republic of China.

The Australian reports that News has estimated its annual carbon footprint at 641,150 tonnes. But under the company’s complicated dual-share structure, Mr Murdoch is only morally responsible for just over 200,000 tonnes.

Under the plan, for every 323 tonnes of carbon sequestered, News will use The Sun to publish the headline “Gotcha! Our lads sink carbon”.
