The centre reportedly exploded with bargains at 1.45pm. Hazmat crews initially struggled to contain hot summer fashions, electronics and jewelry.

The Herald quoted eyewitnesses as saying that staff were insisting on collecting parking tickets from exiting patrons.

This process outraged safety-conscious shoppers who had the presence of mind to respond to an evacuation by heading to the carpark, locating their vehicle and queuing at the exit.

Fire investigators will now begin the process of sifting through over 150 specialty stores plus Coles, Kmart, Target, Bi Lo and a Hoyts cinema.
