$10bn rescue comes too late for Graham Murray

30 March 2008 | Joe Stella

North Queensland Cowboys coach Graham Murray is facing the axe after the team’s 36-2 loss to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium last night.

Read more background from Australian Associated Press.

With three straight losses under his belt, Murray’s future at the club looks bleak, despite Federal Government plans to spend $10 billion to assure his survival.

Although scientists have long warned that Murray can’t cope, state Labor leaders refused to agree to a federal rescue package last year. Although this week the last of the states finally signed up to the Murray rescue plan, it may already be too late.

That’s the view of Professor Mike Young, who told The Australian that Murray “has to be fixed, but it has got to be fast and done properly ... The agreement is not going to do that.

“We will remain in continuous crisis until we can put a sustainable regime at the top.”

Experts say that if Murray is beyond rescue, federal attention should turn immediately to St George Illawarra’s Nathan Brown, Penrith’s Matt Elliott and the Bulldogs’ Steve Folkes.
