Swimming thug D’Arcy dumped, may sign on as torch guard thug

21 April 2008 | Joe Stella

Butterfly swimmer Nick D’Arcy has been dumped from the Australian Olympic team after being charged by police with assault and causing grievous bodily harm. Mr D’Arcy allegedly broke swimmer Simon Cowley’s nose and jaw with his elbow last month.

Read more background from Agence France-Presse.

Mr D’Arcy was intoxicated during the incident, attacking Cowley after his 16th drink, a new Commonwealth record.

Mr D’Arcy may be off the team, but could still attend the Olympics as one of those Chinese government thugs guarding the torch relay.

While the sport of swimming will always have a loyal Australian fan base, the incident probably marks the end of butterfly stroke’s long battle to be taken seriously. That said, butterfly’s ability to build incredible elbow strength is now well-known.

The swimmer faces court tomorrow. The family’s lawyer Jack Leitner says D’Arcy has been training hard for the crucial meet and is in peak contrition. Mr Leitner then told some jokes.
