ABC presenter suspended after ranting to all six of his listeners

21 October 2008 | Joe Stella

Radio National presenter Stephen Crittenden has been suspended by ABC management after attacking the corporation’s decision to axe his unpopular Religion Report show.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Managers are concerned that the six people who were listening at the time may form negative opinions about the broadcaster.

The ABC plans to axe the Religion Department’s flagship programme, The Religion Report, as well as Breakfast with Jesus and Amanda, Apostles in the Morning and Get Thine.

Also facing the axe is a Saturday morning Orthodox-Jewish call-in show, which wasn’t getting many listeners.

Mr Crittenden told listeners he rejected management’s view that religious programming had gone mainstream, assuring his audience that no-one knew better than he did how tedious and unpopular all this religion shit is.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Mr Crittenden as saying that the decision “effectively spells the death of religion at the ABC.“ However sources close to the Department have faith that religion at the ABC will rise again after three days.

And yea, Stephen Crittenden did prophesy that Radio National would lose credibility if it didn't have so many niche shows. And Crittenden's boss did look upon this prophecy, and considered it unprofessional.
