History made as a horse wins Melbourne Cup for the 148th time

4 November 2008 | Joe Stella

Five-year-old stallion Viewed has taken out the 2008 Melbourne Cup in a photo finish, delivering trainer Bart Cummings a record 12th Cup win.

The race marks a record 148th straight win for a horse at the Cup, Australia’s highest-profile sporting event.

Also celebrating Viewed’s record-breaking win was human rider Blake Shinn, who helped continue humanity’s 148-year streak of being the species atop each Melbourne Cup winner.

The racecourse ambulance had hoped to end the horse’s Cup domination this year, but ultimately finished a disappointing 22nd. But having at least beat one of the horses—Gallopin failed to finish—the perennial entrant has reason to look forward to a better result next year. Trainer the Metropolitan Ambulance Service confirmed that the ambulance planned to return for the 2009 Cup.
