Journalists, politicians and other luminaries are among those paying tribute to curmudgeonly left-wing commentator Alan Ramsey, who retires from Fairfax Media later this month.
Mr Ramsey hated writing his bitter Sydney Morning Herald columns so much, that he has chosen a retirement that he’s unhappy about and will intensely dislike.
In a brief statement that ran to six rambling pages, Mr Ramsey said that journalism would be worse without him even though it was already pretty awful.
Mr Ramsey was known at Canberra waterholes for his signature drink, three parts vodka, two parts human bile, served in an opaque glass. The drink, called “The Whitlam Dismissal”, is guaranteed to go down bitter.
Mr Ramsey becomes the first member of the Fairfax team to leave before being sacked since Margot Kingston was scheduled under the Mental Health Act and confined to a secure blogging facility.
