A man in his fifties has been rushed to hospital just 12 minutes into this year’s City2Surf race.
Well-wishers and support staff helped the man back to his feet and called out words of encouragement as he rushed off to nearby St Vincent’s Hospital.
The one-kilometre course is considered challenging for recent heart-attack victims, including the one-kilometre section known as ‘heartbreak hill’.
The man completed the run to the hospital in 96 minutes, a personal best.
The City2Surf began in 1971 as a cheaper, quicker alternative to the 380 bus. From those humble beginnings, the race has grown to become 75,000 Sydneysiders’ preferred way of proving to everyone at work what a hardarse they are come Monday morning.
