The state’s Industrial Relations Commission has ruled that the police must reinstate an officer who covered up his second job as “The Magic Jester”.
Senior Constable Shayne Richards lied repeatedly to his employers but is being reinstated on a technicality—that he was able to retrieve then commissioner Ken Moroney’s card from the deck.
Handing down his ruling, Justice Frank Marks said that Commissioner Moroney had not followed the correct procedure. Justice Marks outlined the correct procedure for sacking a magical clown, which involves a bucket of water and a trap door.
By standing up for a worker’s right to take a sickie to work a second job, Justice Marks is returning dignity to industrial relations. As the verdict was read out, Constable Clown, in his enormous stripy pants, made honking noises and fell over.
It’s not yet clear what duties Constable Clown will return to. One possibility is interrogating hard-to-break suspects, since no-one can stand more than 15 minutes of a comedy/magic show.
