Nigerian prisoners recaptured after smuggling themselves out in emails

12 September 2007 | Joe Stella

Nigerian authorities say that no prisoners escaped during an attempted break-out at Agodi Prison today, according to ABC News. Eight would-be escapees were shot dead during the incident.

Read more background from ABC News.

The breakout began after hundreds of prisoners barricaded themselves in the jail’s server room. Having taken a sysadmin hostage, the prisoners were able to force their way into a Microsoft Exchange server and send themselves via email to accomplices outside the prison.

Authorities were able to use Outlook’s “Recall this message” feature to recapture the few who made it out before the server room was stormed.

As reports of the incident began to emerge, it became clear that Agodi Prison lacks proper medical facilities; the police response was disproportionate; and that at least one prisoner is the nephew of former dictator General Suni Abacha and, by the grace of God, has $1.9 billion to transfer out of the country.

The breakout’s ringleader was confined to the Junk Mail folder.
