A Dunedin man will face court next week after confessing to hitting a parking inspector with his car, NZPA has reported.
The man faces dangerous driving charges as well as a fine for illegally parking on the inspector.
According to the NZPA, the hit-and-run was retaliation for what the motorist considered an unfair parking ticket. Under New Zealand law, one of the possible defences to a charge of ‘parking where prohibited by official sign’ is ‘I later ran over a parking inspector’.
The driver, who has not been named, went straight to the police after the incident to turn himself in, NZPA reports. The Daily Grind understands that the man, aged in his sixties, asked the duty sergeant if they were still serving breakfast.
A parking inspector is just one of many public officials on whom it is illegal to park, with serious fines for offenders. Even when you are allowed to park on someone, strict time limits are enforced. Otago Regional Council advises motorists to check signage or the official your car is on top of before leaving your vehicle.
