The Australian Capital Territory’s first-ever prison, the Alexander Maconochie Centre, is due to open in September, the Canberra Times has reported. Maconochie is human-rights compliant and costs more per head than the current practice of sending inmates in New South Wales prisons.
Maconochie is the change you and your co-accused have been waiting for. Perfectly located on the Monaro Highway south of Canberra, this distinctive development has been thoughtfully designed to capture the essence of the region. Maconochie will be your opportunity to live life—and serve life—as it was meant to be.
Approximately 30 hectares of Maconochie will be kept as open space including woodland and green parks, while historic elements on the site will be retained to reinforce Maconochie’s historic and unique identity.
Maconochie will ultimately be home to up to 300 new inmates. Cell designs will make the most of preserving the charm and character of the unique Monaro setting.
