A police officer has been shot dead during a routine training exercise in Manchester. The officer was killed accidentally by a colleague during a weapons training session at an abandoned warehouse.
The shooter has not yet been publicly identified but is reportedly known to police.
It is understood that the victim, PC Ian James Terry, was mistaken for one of the London Underground bombers, but later turned out to be a Brazilian tourist.
The episode highlights the dangers faced every day by British police, and has led to calls for officers to be allowed to carry a firearm whenever they’re in a hostile training situation.
Last year, two officers were hospitalised with testicle injuries after a sexual harassment workshop.
