ABC journo facing 20 years in prison, enough time to watch The Einstein Factor

22 July 2008 | Joe Stella

ABC journalist Peter Lloyd is facing gaol in Singapore after being caught with crystal meth in his hotel room.

The incident shows that people will do anything to avoid exorbitant hotel minibar prices.

Mr Lloyd faces up to 20 years in prison, which is around about enough time to watch one episode of The Einstein Factor.

The journalist was experiencing personal turmoil after coming out of the closet a few months back. A Singaporean official told us that “there won’t be any drugs or gay sex where he’s going.”

Lawyers will allege that the prosecution is not fair, though it’s hard to see an ABC employee successfully accusing someone else of bias.

This isn’t the first time ABC staff have faced legal trouble. In 1997, B1 and B2 were arrested arriving at Sydney Airport after failing to declare themselves.

Singapore at a glance

The Republic of Singapore is an airport transit lounge located somewhere between Sydney and London. If you’ve never been to this nation of 3 million, imagine Westfield Chatswood with the air-conditioning off—and fewer Asians.

During World War II, the country was invaded and occupied by the Axis powers after just 11 minutes, shaving two minutes of the time of the previous record-holder, France.

The country’s national symbol is the “merlion”, a creature that’s half lion, half fish. It was after coming up with the merlion concept that Singapore really started to crack down on drugs.

The country’s tough criminal justice system includes the death penalty, the cane, and Friday afternoon detention.
