On the eve of the execution of the three Bail bombers, the mother of one of the victims has told The Sydney Morning Herald that she’d rather they have their penises shot off.
Pauline Whitton of Caringbah also wants the bombers’ hands cut off and a life sentence imposed.
It’s a punishment so complex and vengeful that Amnesty International wouldn’t even know where to begin opposing it.
Of course, there are practical concerns that prevent Mrs Whitton’s sentence idea from being used. Firstly, men would find watching a dick-shoot-off very uncomfortable to watch.
Secondly, a prisoner without hands would easily be able to escape handcuffs. He may also be able to have thrown out any fingerprint evidence previously used against him.
Thirdly, in English law, you don’t get to start taking off dicks until the condemned has done something really bad, like organise a treason trial for Charles I. Legal experts say it is unlikely that Jemaah Islamiyah would have had anything like the organisational capacity required to arrest the King and establish an ad hoc High Court of Justice.
But there are certainly strong arguments in favour of the Whitton plan: deprive an inmate of his hands and penis and suddenly a a life spent alone in one little room looks a lot less interesting.
The execution of Imam Samudra and brothers Amrozi and Mukhlas bin Haji Nurhasyim is scheduled to take place any day now. The bombers’ last meal is understood to be nasi goreng, although Indonesia also has a Thai place nearby, Thailand.
