Graffiti vandal was just expressing herself as a destructive little shit

4 February 2009 | Joe Stella

An 18-year-old Sydney woman will appeal a three-month gaol sentence for defacing the wall of a CBD café.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

The rare custodial sentence for graffiti is seen by many as excessive, since all Cheyene Back wanted to do was express herself: as a destructive little shit.

But despite the ample opportunities offered throughout her education to find a creative outlet such as writing or artmaking, Miss Back had always failed to engage with his artistic side. Or perhaps even attend Art or English classes at all.

But now, graffiti is allowing this young woman to discover her true self and exhibit it before a wide audience. Thanks to the medium of vandalism, Miss Back can show the world what a destructive little shit she is.

The defendant’s 30-by-50-centimetre tag reads “2shie”—but what is the artist “tooshie” about? Critics may speculate on the anger within that drives this important new voice on the Sydney art scene.

While the meaning of the work may be opaque, what is clear is that Miss Back’s work is freely available for viewing by the general public: just like the Art Gallery and the MCA.
