Questions are being asked about how British woman Samantha Orobator became pregnant after being gaoled in Laos for heroin smuggling.
Orobator was not pregnant when she was arrested at Vientiane airport, although moments later she appeared to give birth to several condoms full of heroin.
The Laotian government wants Orobator to tell the media she wasn’t raped in prison. Asked who fathered the baby, spokesman Kenthong Nuanthasing said: “It is a mystery—maybe it is a baby from the sky.” Zzzzip.
Orobator is being held in the notorious Phonthong prison, whose slogan is “And you thought the rest of Laos was shit.”
A French former inmate who spent five months in a Lao prison said: “Female prisoners were coerced into sex with promises from guards that they would ... make life inside more comfortable.” Guards confirmed that they had indeed been able to make life in the prison much more comfortable.
Human rights lawyer Anna Morris flew to Vientiane last week to represent Orobator but has been refused permission to see her. She has however been given permission to see Kenthong Nuanthasing. Zzzzip.
