First-ever quadriplegic prisoner to get a space really close to Long Bay’s front door

8 June 2009 | Joe Stella and Jebediah Cole

In an Australian first, a New South Wales court has gaoled a quadriplegic man. Paul Anthony Baker, 36, was the mastermind behind an ecstasy production ring.

Read more background from The Sunday Telegraph.

Mr Baker will be required to report to Long Bay correctional facility in two weeks time. The Daily Grind understands he’ll be able to get a park really close to the front door.

Mr Baker now realises that he has a drug problem, but will have trouble completing a 12-step programme.

The sentence is out of the ordinary—often quadriplegic prisoners will be sentenced to home detention, or in extreme cases, “the chair”.

Under home detention, Mr Baker would have had to wear an electronic ankle bracelet, or at the very least an E-tag.
