Murdered woman may have been on internet date: autopsy reveals time of death, GSOH

5 October 2009 | Joe Stella and Jebediah Cole

A London woman found dead in a pond may have been on an internet date the night she was killed, police believe.

Tragically, the victim is unlikely to be the last internet dating user to be dumped so soon after the first meeting.

The murder takes another available single out of the dating game. Men are reminded that there are still plenty of fish in the pond.

An autopsy was able to pinpoint the time of death, and revealed that the victim had a good sense of humour.

Identification of the victim was however hampered by the fact that she didn’t look anything like her photo.

The woman had hoped to avoid being slain by marking the OkCupid question “Would you murder someone on a first date?” as “Very important”.

Police are now combing several online dating sites and hope to interview several young women believed to be interested in “sexy fun”.

The incident underscores the importance of tips for safe online dating, such as meet in a public place, let someone know where you are, and, on the first date, don’t agree to go back to his pond.

Police have had a suspect in custody for a week. They have sought and received a warrant to detain the man longer, as they are anxious that if they let him go now he may never call to arrange a second meeting.
