Liverpool’s council chambers been destroyed in a major blaze that investigators suspect may have been deliberately lit.
The fire is understood to have made ‘significant alterations’ to the building despite failing to file a development application.
Although no-one was injured, the council chambers were home to the nation’s largest collection of portraits of mayors of Liverpool.
Investigators say the fire started in the canteen, but only took hold because councillors had left so many neatly-stacked branches.
Fire engines surrounded the council building at 12.35am Sunday morning and by 1.36am had been issued with parking tickets.
Like anything connected to local government, the fire is being treated as highly suspicious.
Labor mayor Wendy Waller is already regretting a earlier decision to let the Federal Government install insulation.
Fire investigators on the scene quickly deduced that what they were dealing with was some sort of fire.
