New Zealand Corrections chief Barry Matthews is fighting for his job after paroled murderer Graeme Burton went on a crime spree and killed father-of-two Karl Kuchenbecker, Wellington’s Dominion-Post has reported.
The scandal means that Mr Matthews could soon be released from the prison system, years earlier than was intended.
Asked to explain how a parolee could kill one man and wound four others, Mr Matthews told The Dominion-Post that “I don’t think there is a nexus between the tragedy and the management of his parole.”
The Daily Grind understands that the five victims would have encountered Mr Burton even if the murderer had not been out of prison.
Mr Matthews has ordered an immediate investigation into exactly how many of the country’s prisoners are capable of criminal behaviour.
The opposition National party’s justice and corrections spokesman, Simon Power, was quoted by The Dominion-Post as saying that “heads must roll over this disaster.”
Mr Matthews countered that there was nothing in Mr Power’s comments to suggest he was unhappy with Corrections’ handling of the incident, and absolutely no suggestion that Mr Power was prone to using violent metaphors.
