Female Afghan MP on junket says her rights haven’t improved since the Taliban

9 March 2007 | Joe Stella

The youngest woman in Afghan’s parliament has slammed the US-led invasion of her native country that toppled the Taliban, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. Malalai Joya told a Sydney audience that women’s rights are no better than under the Taliban.

Under the Islamofascist Taliban, which held power until 2001, Miss Joya apparently used her position as a member of parliament to criticise government policy towards women.

It was a message she took to the world, since travel to International Women’s Day events was also something the Taliban was okay with.

But the US-led invasion has changed little, Miss Joya said. The Herald report quoted her as saying that “If Australian policymakers really want to help Afghan people and bring positive changes, they must align their policies according to the aspirations and wishes of Afghan people, rather than becoming a tool to implement the wrong policies of the US government.”

The democratically-elected MP then demanded democratic elections, for some sort of parliament, and that the US and its allies support the authority of that parliament.

“There should also be one day a year for us to reflect on the situation of women, internationally,” Miss Joya continued.
