Democrats will stand by commitment to cut and run, whatever it takes

19 May 2007 | Jebediah Cole

The two major Democratic presidential candidates have now committed to a March 2008 deadline for withdrawal from Iraq. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama have both endorsed cutting funding for combat operations on a strict deadline for the first time.

The two left-wing leaders made it clear that they would back the cut-and-run strategy to the hilt, no matter what.

“This decision is about more than Iraq”, Mr Obama explained. “Its about becoming the president.”

Mrs Clinton linked her stance to the firm and unchanging principles she apparently laid down shortly after voting in favour of US involvement in Iraq in 2003.

Candidates refuse to outline what they think will happen if America does pull out of Iraq. Electoral analysts say this is because “bloody sectarian conflict” doesn’t play well to key demographics. Congress famously withheld support for Saigon in 1974, allowing a positive and peaceful outcome to play itself out in Vietnam after years of armed conflict.

Local man Bill Clinton refused to comment on whether withdrawal was an effective method.
