Timor Leste’s army chief has slammed Australian soldiers for not preventing the assassination attempt on President Jose Ramos-Horta, The Daily Telegraph reports.
Brigadier-General Taur Matan Ruak did not elaborate on what he was doing at the time.
Protecting the life of the commander-in-chief is an important part of a neighbouring country’s duty of care.
Soldiers from the Timor Leste defence forces were present when President Ramos-Horta was shot, but were unable to save him owing to their 2006 defection to the rebels.
The early morning gun battle claimed the life of rebel Major Alfredo Reinado, high-profile supervillain and gun control campaigner.
