In a hopeful sign that Wednesday’s apology to the Stolen Generations will allow the country to move forward, there have been calls for more apologies, The Sydney Morning Herald has reported.
It turns out that state and federal apologies were all very well, it’s just that what’s really needed is a couple of extra apologies, one from the Federal Opposition, and another from the British government.
Faye Lynam, a part-Aboriginal woman from Shepparton, Victoria, told the Herald she was “stolen all over again,” so obviously a couple more apologies are required to get the process back on track. Although Mrs Lynam already got a requested apology from opposition leader Brendan Nelson, she wants to attach some conditions.
“I want to attach some conditions to the apology,” she sobbed to The Daily Grind.
Indigenous leaders will meet with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd next week, hoping to secure a concrete timetable for every non-Aboriginal Australian to publicly apologise.
Conservative critics, who noted how quickly the state government apologies of the past decade were forgotten, have been accused of “re-reading history”.
Mrs Lynam has not yet revealed whether or not her failure to get whatever else she demands from the government will constitute being “stolen all over again”.
