A Timorese-born Australian citizen has been charged in connection with last week’s assassination attempts against Timor Leste’s president and prime minister. Angelita Pires is understood to have been close to the late rebel leader Alfredo Reinado, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Prosecutors allege that Miss Pires attempted to smuggle the 11 February coup attempt in her boogie-board bag.
The Herald reports that Miss Pires worked as a croupier at Darwin’s Skycity Casino and frequently visited rebel bases in Timor’s north.
Last year’s change of government means that no-one much cares about her time at the rebel base, but she could be a target of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s planned attacks on poker machines.
