Serbia is threatening to recall its ambassadors to countries that recognise the independence of Kosovo, AAP has reported. Belgrade’s envoy to Canberra, Milivoje Glisic, expects to be summoned home soon.
“This petulance could stop the rest of the world getting its message across,” Serbian Prime Minister Vojislac Kostunica told The Daily Grind. “They have chosen to isolate themselves on an issue over which they have little control.”
Mr Kostunica has already stalled his country’s progress towards European Union membership in retaliation.
“Europe will have to decide if Kosovo’s independence is worth isolation from Serbia,” Mr Kostunica told us. EU members were the first countries willing to join a union with Serbia since at least 1943.
Austrian Vice-Chancellor Wilhelm Molterer closed ten points down on the news.
Serbia is not without allies, however. Russia has offered a compromise solution under which Kosovo would become part of the Soviet Union. China has suggested that Kosovo rejoin Serbia but still field its own Olympic team.
