Govt official suspended over bribes to destroy evidence of bribes given to cover up bribery

20 February 2008 | Damian Prendergast

A senior NSW Labor Party official and friend of Ports Minister Joe Tripodi has been stood down from his recent appointment to a $200,000-a-year public service job in Mr Tripodi’s portfolio. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Premier Morris Iemma’s hand was forced by a corruption scandal.

Given that Joe Scimone’s original appointment was apparently okay by Mr Iemma, pundits speculate that the new corruption allegations must be pretty fucking bad.

Mr Scimone allegedly paid $30,000 to two men posing as Independent Commission Against Corruption officers to destroy evidence against him.

The evidence against the senior NSW Labor identity turned out to be him paying a $30,000 bribe to destroy it.

Legal experts say that Mr Scimone will never understand recursion unless he comes to grips with recursion.

The two men cited in the allegations were apparently con men running a scam in which they approach figures in the Iemma government, claim to have evidence of corruption and offer to destroy it for a fee. The pair have not revealed how often their cold calling was successful.

Mr Tripodi is rumoured to have offered the men a job-share arrangement in a recently vacated $200,000-a-year position in his department to make the affair go away.

Premier Iemma is facing an even bigger scandal this week, with his former Aboriginal Affairs Minister Milton Orkopoulos pleading guilty to drug and pornography charges yesterday and facing a further 34 child sex and drug charges. Mr Orkopoulos sought to explain his actions as research for his portfolio.
