Australia is to get its first-ever female Governor-General, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has announced. Queensland Governor Quentin Bryce will take over from Major-General Michael Jeffries in September.
The new G-G will bring novelty to Yarralumla, as well as a vagina.
News.com.au is calling Mrs Bryce the first female Governor-General in 107 years, perhaps because the office is 107 years old—or perhaps in a veiled criticism of the Earl of Hopetoun (1860-1908).
Come to think of it, Bill Hayden was also a bit of a girl.
Mrs Bryce shares a home state with Mr Rudd, and told News.com.au that she “grew up in a little bush town in Queensland with 200 people.” She may have been referring to Brisbane.
Greens leader Bob Brown praised the appointment as bringing the country out of the Howard era. Under former Prime Minister John Howard, Queenslanders were barred from high office.
