NSW govt delivers new rail line ad on time and on budget

19 April 2008 | Joe Stella

The New South Wales government won’t reveal the cost of a television and print advertising campaign, featuring traffic reporter Vic Larusso, for its proposed North West Metro.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Transport Minister John Watkins today announced that the new European-style metro had been delivered nine years ahead of schedule because it had been built using animation software rather than concrete.

And although Mr Watkins says he doesn’t know how much the ad campaign costs, it’s a safe bet that it’s less than the $12 billion a real railway line would cost.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald report, the government believes that the announcement didn’t get enough publicity. This assessment is based on the lack of ongoing media coverage for all the other proposed rail lines the government announced and then forgot about.

The ads feature a wireframe-style model of the metro, informing viewers of the following little-known facts:
- North-West Metro trains will run from north-west Sydney to the city
- Vic Larusso doesn’t have anything to do between morning and evening peak
- An underground train travels underneath the ground
- Beyond 2000 was an awesome show and should be brought back
