Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change is ahead in a controversial recount of votes from the 29 March electionconfirming its emphatic victory over the Mugabe regime.
The MDC pulled ahead in the count after the government’s photocopier jammed.
The copier had been, with rural areas in the north, one of the ruling party’s biggest source of votes.
If the guy doesn’t come out to fix the copier soon, election authorities could borrow one from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe, once the bread-basket of Southern Africa, spiralled into dictatorship and decline in 2000 after the government of President Robert Mugabe began to seize white-owned photocopiers. Colour became a political issue, as did auto-duplexing, collating and network connectivity. As a result, many Zimbabweans face prices of hundreds of thousands of dollars per page, and even more if they do their copying at FedEx Kinko’s.
