Militants in Iraq have killed 17 more Iraqis in protest at the arrest of television journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi, who threw his shoes at US President George Bush on Sunday.
Defence chiefs have expressed concern at the possibility that Iraq is secretly developing short-range shoe capability.
Mr Al-Zeidi was protesting against the presence of foreign troops in the country, and chose the announcement of their withdrawal to make is statement.
“At last the world will know that some Iraqis do not support the US invasion,” Mr Al-Zeidi told The Daily Grind.
Security removed the journalist, but not before mistakenly assuming that the assailant was a visibly intoxicated Glenn Milne.
A spokesman for the 17 Iraqis killed in protest questioned why they couldn’t have been attacked with shoes as well.
American reporters have long planned to throw their own shoes at Mr Bush, but administration officials knew the dangers and never let them get close enough.
