Leichhardt not worried about radioactive space debris, they’re a nuclear-free zone

23 December 2008 | Joe Stella

Four councils in Sydney’s Inner West have compiled a report on disaster management that canvasses the possibility of plane crashes, meteor strikes and other catastrophes.

Read more background from The Sydney Morning Herald.

Ashfield, Burwood, Canada Bay and Strathfield councils worked together on the report. The disasters most likely to befall each area respectively are two-story buildings, the ICAC, Quebec Bay separatists and massacres.

Not all Inner West councils got involved.

Marrickville is developing its disaster plan in conjunction with controversial sister city Bethlehem, with the document set to include such potential disasters as Israeli helicopter gunships, running out of throwable stones and having no room at the inn.

Leichhardt councillors do not consider their municipality to be at risk from missile attack or radioactive space debris - two possibilities mentioned in the four-council report - because it sensibly declared a “nuclear free zone”.

Major threats to Leichhardt include the Hummer H3 Adventure with 3.7-litre Vortec™ engine and leather upholstery as standard.

The City of Sydney isn’t concerned about disasters including tsunamis and rising sea levels because, having already put up all those green “Sustainable Sydney 2030” banners, it’s totally immune.
