Myanmar releases North Korean prisoners: inmates reply “we were in prison?“

8 January 2009 | Joe Stella

Nineteen North Korean defectors have been released from detention in autocratic Myanmar and will make their way to a third Asian country en route to South Korea.

Burmese authorities released the group after the latter failed to realise they had been detained, thinking that the lack of freedoms and poor living conditions were just like everyday life.

Defecting from North Korea is like scuba diving; if you leave too fast, your body won’t be able to cope with the dramatic drop in pressure.

Those fleeing the dictatorship in Pyongyang are advised to go first to a shithole like Myanmar, then a shithole that is at the very least improving, like Laos.

When The Daily Grind contacted Lao authorities to test this theory, we were told “hey, guess what? Fuck you.“

Now that Myanmar has released the 19 North Koreans, all eyes are on North Korea, which is currently holding some 24 million North Koreans.
