Joyce backs whoever is leading Nats as party leader

12 January 2009 | Joe Stella

Maverick Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce has sought to hose down speculation that he wants to take over the party leadership, reiterating his support for the incumbent’s leadership.

Read more background from ABC News.

“I genuinely think that guy is doing a good job,” Senator Joyce told The Daily Grind, “whoever he may be.”

The senator would not be drawn on specifics such as when he would switch to the House of Representatives, which seat he was looking at, or who the current leader of the National Party is.

Senator Joyce told ABC Radio that “Fair dinkum, [he’s] one of the best leaders of the Nationals we’ve ever had and I certainly do not want his homework and I think he’s also a good bloke.”

The outspoken Queenslander later clarified his remarks to The Daily Grind, making clear that the leader was “true blue”, “dinky-di” and “a bit of all right”.

The Daily Grind sought comment from the Nationals leader by calling Nats MPs at random.
