Sixty-three agencies in the Federal Government’s Job Network will miss out on contracts as part of an overhaul of the system.
While the government isn’t saying how many jobs will be lost at the agencies, the good news is that hundreds of axed staff will enjoy immediate access to their own job-placement expertise, free of charge.
Employment Participation Minister Brendan O’Connor has played down the prospect of job losses in the employment-services sector, lest there be job losses in the Employment Participation Minister sector.
Mr O’Connor told The Australian that counting the number of jobs at risk under the changes was like comparing apples and pears. The clear implication: no matter how bad the economy gets, there’ll always be a job for you picking fruit.
Criticising the move, social-sector lobby group ACOSS told The Australian that “Non-profit, smaller and specialised providers make a vital contribution in getting people who are unemployed back to work.”
But the government has hit back at the criticism, saying that thanks to their reforms, specialised providers were now free to become even smaller and even more non-profit.
