Adelaide City Council staff say that the accidental draining of Torrens Lake was caused by a computer glitch and not operator error.
Council chief executive Peter Smith told AAP that checks with staff found no evidence of anyone being involved.
Indeed, his investigation failed to find any evidence of a single member of council staff being back from lunch at the time.
The February incident left behind a litter-strewn eyesore that locals dubbed “Adelaide”.
The incident dropped water levels in the lake by more than two metres, almost offsetting a previous six-metre rise caused by global warming.
The draining of the lake exposed 17 tonnes of debris, including shopping trolleys, bikes and even an abandoned car—which Council removed after issuing it a parking ticket.
It caused major problems for businesses that relied on the lake, including the city’s paddleboat operator, a river cruise company and the mob.
The lesson for Adelaide City Council is that a faulty computer will lose your water if you forget to save.
