Asylum-seekers’ boat exploded during refuelling of fire they started

1 May 2009 | Joe Stella

Advocates for the asylum-seekers aboard the SIEV 36 say that the 16 April explosion on deck was an accident that occurred while refuelling.

Read more background from ABC News.

Community leaders say that the the accident occurred when the people on board attempted to refuel the fire they’d started.

Another theory is that Vice-Admiral Sir Francis Drake was aboard the SIEV 36 and mistook the HMAS Albany for the Spanish Armada.

However authorities regard the crew’s attempt to refuel as suspicious because 16 April wasn’t a Tuesday.

The asylum-seekers on board the SIEV 36 say they were fleeing persecution in both their homeland and a series of intermediate countries, each of which had discriminatory laws against setting fire to one’s boat.

According to officials, the SIEV 36 was overloaded and, at least since the fire started, offered lousy fuel economy.
