A parliamentary report has recommended lower speed limits for motorists near level crossings, after investigating the tragic 2007 Kerang railway disaster.
While the committee is recommending a maximum speed of 80, rail experts say that the optimum speed for traffic at an active level crossing is zero.
The investigation focussed on questions of whether it is safe for a road to intersect with a railway line, and whether it’s safe for a truck to intersect with a train.
Committee chairman Catherine King stressed the importance of raising awareness of the issue among drivers. However, a The Daily Grind poll of drivers found that they already had a high level of awareness of the 123-tonne V/Line N Class locomotive currently ploughing through their vehicle.
