Bundanoon bottled-water prohibition will encourage locals to distill ‘bathtub water’

10 July 2009 | Joe Stella

A group of residents in the Southern Highlands town of Bundanoon have voted for a symbolic ban on bottled water, citing environmental concerns.

Read more background from Australian Associated Press.

Locals had objected to the practice of bottling water in the district, trucking it to Sydney and then back to their shops. Apparently these people never heard of ‘the water cycle.’

But by cutting off legal supplies of water, the do-gooders seem likely to simply push the town’s drinking problem underground.

Within hours of the ban taking effect, smugglers were sneaking truckloads of Mount Franklin south across the border from Wollondilly Shire.

Smugglers charge a premium for the water they bring in—over a thousand times the cost from the tap.

More dangerous is the prospect of thirsty Highlanders turning to backyard stills and unsanitary ‘bathtub water’.

The decision by a group of local businesses to get together and collectively agree not to stock a particular product has been lauded as both ‘thinking global, acting local’ and a breach of the Trade Practices Act.

Other stuff to ban

Does your bullshit little town care about the environment too, just like Bundanoon? Here are some other things you could ban!

  • Going to the video shop unless you already know what you want to rent
  • That fancy enamel toothpaste with too much packaging
  • Encouraging city folk to drive to the Southern Highlands of a weekend when we’re pretty sure you can buy antiques and fudge or whatever in Sydney
  • Cheese—that seems like the sort of thing you could probably make at home
  • Electricity
  • Pointless town meetings everyone has to drive to
