Nats demand assistance for mums who choose to stay in opposition

6 August 2010 | Joe Stella

The Coalition is sending mixed messages on paid parental leave after Nationals MPs said they’d force changes to Liberal policy in a bid to help stay-at-home mums.

Read more background from The Australian.

The MPs say that Opposition Leader Tony Abbott’s $6.3 billion scheme discriminates against mothers who make the perfectly valid choice to stay in opposition rather than, say, trying to get a job in a government of some sort.

The Nationals’ position may not help the Coalition campaign, but it’s a timely reminder to the Liberals that if all you’re doing with your partner is fucking them, then you can hardly expect them to go to work as well.

Mr Abbott’s plan for the government to pay new mothers up to $150,000 a year to listen to tantrums and clean up shit is based on the same principle that underpins the Public Service.
