Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will hit the campaign trail in support of Labor’s troubled re-election campaign—but the woman who ousted him in June says there was “no deal” to secure his support.
Labor has also confirmed it’s in talks to exhume the body of former Labor leader Ben Chifley (1885-1951) so he can bolster the party’s campaign in Macquarie (Labor 0.3%).
Mr Chifley’s failure to clearly articulate his support for Prime Minister Julia Gillard has proved a major distraction for Labor over the past two weeks.
Sources close to the wartime prime minister say that his low profile in the campaign so far is due to his gall bladder decomposing over the past 59 years.
Ms Gillard maintains there was “no deal” for Mr Chifley’s support, although he’s understood to be keen on a frontbench role, grabbing the banks, or ending his nightmarish re-awakening by self-immolation. The prime minister says that all options are “on the table”.
Political analysts say that the exhumation of Mr Chifley is a big risk for the Gillard campaign, especially after the Liberals were savaged this week by the re-animated corpse of Malcolm Fraser.
