Spanish own-goal seals oil-tanker tennis 1-0 to Portugal

10 December 2002 | Joe Stella

The first round of inter-jurisdictional stricken-oil-tanker tennis has gone to Portugal after Spain tried unsuccessfully to push the vessel Prestige into its smaller neighbour’s waters.

The controversial play was designed to force Portugal on to the defensive against the oil, but the move also exposed the Spanish coast to the threat of heavier losses to pollution.

Spain dominated the contest from the outset, with Portugal unable to initiate any plays of its own in the five days of the match.

The blame game kicks off next week, with Spain challenging Gibraltar for a berth against the winner of the European Union and shipping line Universe Maritime.
