Forty thousand litres of petrol and 70,000 litres of kerosene have spilled into the Vam Co Dong River south of Ho Chi Minh City, Agence France-Presse reports.
The dump was apparently a ploy to dilute concentrations of lead and mercury in Vietnam’s rivers.
Natural Resources and Environment Department officials reportedly collected souvenirs, with one bureaucrat quipping to AFP, “we recovered several dozen litres of fuel.”
Local Communist Party officials are apparently contemplating stopping the spread of the pollution downstream by building a giant dam made of turds.
