Whalers may take captured activists back to Japan for ‘scientific research’

17 January 2008 | Joe Stella

Two anti-whaling activists who illegally boarded the Yushin Maru No. 2 two days ago and have been held captive there ever since may be taken back to Japan to face piracy charges, The Australian has reported.

Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research says that Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane will be detained and tried for the purposes of scientific research only.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, in whose name Potts and Lane illegally boarded the whaler, has demanded that the Yushin Maru get closer to its own vessel to return the men, despite what happened last time.

“We have no interest in negotiating with criminals,” Sea Shepherd’s Jonny Vasic told The Australian, apparently turning down the opportunity to speak with Mr Potts and Mr Lane.
