23 January 2008 | Damian Prendergast  and Joe Stella

Tasmanian government scientists have discovered that endangered Tasmanian devils have unusual fire-retardant properties,  The Australian reports.

Read more background from The Australian.

The scientists did not disclose how they made the discovery.

The devils’ flame-resistant qualities are believed to have evolved in Hell.

Anthropologists muse that local Aborigines may have tied Tasmanian devils to the outside of their humpies. The Tasmanian government is promoting the commercial potential of the discovery, with the slogan “Tassie Devils: nature’s asbestos”. The health effects of inhaling one of the animals have not been fully studied.

“It’s great news for the devils,” according to Professor Neil McTrott from the University of North Whitlam, “to know that their pelts are ideal for children’s pyjamas.”
