Word “tsunami” battered by tsunami of use in metaphors

A University of Adelaide professor has warned of an “aging tsunami” battering South Australia, the Adelaide Advertiser reports.

While “tsunami” may seem an odd metaphor for an entirely predictable process that takes place over at least 65 years, Professor Neil McTrott points out that almost the entire South Australian workforce is projected to retire during their lifespan. Prof McTrott, however, has tenure.

Publicly funded academics warn of a “tsunami of tsunamis” sweeping public discourse since the Boxing Day 2004 South-East Asian tsunami. Linguists fear this may only foreshadow an approaching “9/11 of tsunamis” in which the term becomes completely decoupled from its etymological roots.
