Environmentalist slams facts for choking our precious marine mammals

26 January 2008 | Joe Stella

Environmentalist Ian Kiernan has slammed arguments against a ban on plastic shopping bags as “a stubborn refusal to consider anything other than the economic costs”. Writing on ABC Online, Mr Kiernan cited the deaths, from plastic ingestion, of one whale and one turtle as evidence.

Read more background from ABC News.

Mr Kiernan’s strong sense of social justice dictates that if just two animals could be saved via a policy different from the one he advocates, retroactively, then social and economic cost are irrelevant.

For example, for as little as a billion dollars a second, humanity could prevent turtles from eating plastic. Isn’t that worth it? If not for us, then at least for the turtles’ children.

Mr Kiernan’s diatribe begins with economic rationalism, rises to suggest that plastic should be banned, shitcans Ireland’s compromise solution and concludes that the answer lies in each and every one of us.

Though he had no evidence of plastic bags’ actual environmental impact, Mr Kiernan rightly alerted us to the dangers of allowing facts to leach into the ecosystem.

A bryde’s whale later choked on the environmentalist’s bullshit.
