Labor won’t take action on Lib climate policy because they don’t believe it’s happening

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong has dismissed the Coalition’s support for an inquiry into emissions trading options, saying the opposition’s policy is a mirage.

But the opposition has branded Senator Wong a “climate policy skeptic” who is ignoring the signs that a coalition policy is fast developing.

“If Labor doesn’t act now, by the time we announce our policy it will be too late,” frontbencher Christopher Pyne told The Daily Grind.

Although it is difficult to directly observe hard evidence of a coalition climate policy, political scientists say that the debate on whether such a policy exists is over.

Researchers point to the fact that the opposition would surely be trying to exploit what has become a major embarrassment for the government since the economic downturn.

A planned Senate inquiry into climate policy options is also strongly suggestive of an effort to get some ideas on the table.

What is clear is that although we can’t see it, don’t know when it will occur and can’t fathom how serious the consequences, the Coalition climate policy is very real. Senator Wong ignores it at her peril.
